When ecological choices culminate in optimum economy and space
The original request was to convert the loft space of a typical Maison de Maître mansion in Brussels. This mansion had previously been divided into 4 properties.
The plan was to achieve very low energy consumption and use ecological materials with little grey energy.
Once ecology had been made the core of the concerns, the project evolved based around seeking optimum use of energy, expenditure and space.

Loft conversion
On the street side, given the alignment of the façade, it didn’t seem a good idea to change the shape of the roof. The construction work was therefore kept down to a minimum.
In the interior, the initial request was to create a dormer to make a room under the roof. The initial design evolved towards one where the roof design allowed an increase to the interior space whilst keeping construction simple.
In fact, the new roof does not go beyond the height of the adjacent terraced houses, cleverly maintaining the sightlines
