Transformation of the former Monty cinema into a cultural centre
MONTY is an ambitious and fragile project. Jointly supported by the internationally renowned puppet company ‘TOF Théâtre’ and the local authorities, it aims to breathe new life into a dilapidated art deco building by transforming it into a cultural and civic centre. In the past, the people from Genappe came here to be entertained by a film screening, and the Monty cinema was a source of great pride. By moving into the building, the TOF theatrical troupe aims to breathe new life into it.
This new facility will eventually offer a bookshop, a foyer for gatherings and for dining, but also to host conferences and concerts. Finally, amateur and professional performances will be held in front of 150 spectators, in the spotlight of the new stage. In addition to the capacity of the venue, the new prefabricated stands provide additional space for the foyer.
The glued laminated timber construction system made it possible to replace the roof and increase the volume of the venue in a short period of time, while relieving and preserving the weakened existing masonry. Embarked on this adventure by Alain Moreau, director of the TOF and a former tightrope walker, the Karbon’ team had to perform a balancing act to reconcile, despite a very tight budget and space constraints, the technical constraints with the desire for exciting spaces.
